I've been playing with abstract patterns in juxtaposition with realistic firgures for a long time. I was happy that this one came out working both as an abstract element and as Japanese lanterns. It never spells it out, though. I have loved the beautiful designs of Japanese prints ever since I first saw one. These prints used bold and offset compositions to grab the eye. They were often theater posters, designed to interest passers by on the street. Others were sold like comic books and thought of as disposable items. In fact , the story I have hears is that European artists first began seeing the prints packed amongst porcelain shipped from Japan. Artists like Gaugin, Van Gogh and many others were heavily influenced by their bold designs. And now their influence has come around again on another disposable item, the paperback book cover!
